Tell us a lurve story & win a $100 gift card

Posted by TasteMaster Umba on

Some of us are totally into Valentine’s Day, counting down the days and eagerly anticipating how surprised and elated our special person will be with their Valentine’s treat. On the other hand, some of us might feel like all that mushy stuff is just another excuse to spend money, right?

We kinda suck at getting our romance on most of the year (okay, all of the year). Valentine’s day, albeit it smothered by commercial kitsch, is one day where we get to bring our luuurve A-game (and there are tons of reminders everywhere so that we can’t forget the date. Thanks capitalism!).

Although we might bemoan the soppiness and the cheap red plastic all over the place, the day always turns out to have a certain buzz of excitement in the air. There’s the promise of something-something, but if it ends in disappointment, we can always console ourselves with “man, it’s just a marketing ploy”.

At the risk of ruining that consolation, we Googled around a bit to find out if Valentine’s really is just a marketing strategy.

According to History.com it was aliens. Just kidding. What History.com does say is that Valentine’s Day’s origins are shrouded in mystery. Although its history is foggy, it goes back far into the third century. However, the first romantic celebrations of Valentine’s day started in the Middle Ages when “it was commonly believed in France and England that February 14 was the beginning of birds’ mating season, which added to the idea that the middle of Valentine’s Day should be a day for romance.”

It was only in the 17th century when Valentine’s Day really started to be celebrated with enthusiasm. Whatever the mood of the time was by the 1800s, it was certainly one that encouraged people to show their appreciation for one another: “it was common for friends and lovers of all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes”.

By 1900, handwritten cards were far less common: printing technology allowed ready-made cards to come about, which were apparently needed since it was “ a time when direct expression of one’s feelings was discouraged.” That’s sad, what if you’re just aching to tell someone how you feel and all you could do was send them an impersonal card reading “I think you’re nice, from your Valentine”.

In the 21st century, we are fortunate enough to be as open as we want to be, or as secretive as we want to be, about catching feelings. That’s something worth acknowledging. So, instead of taking our privilege for granted, let’s celebrate the fact that we can bare our souls and say what we wanna say.

This is exactly why we, at Umba, are inviting you to tell your best vaping lurve story!
